On the Excitation of the Earth's Polar Motion

چکیده
One of the conclusions reached by recent studies of Barnes et al. and later Hide was "that atmospheric excitation alone was sufficient to account for the observed polar motion over (the studied) period, that there is apparently no need to invoke substantial excitation either by the fluid core or... earthquakes." The purpose of the present paper is to point out that their argument that led to the above conclusion is unjustifiable (hence whether the conclusion is in reality true or not is still an open question). I demonstrate this through a physical "thought" experiment and a numerical simulation. In essence, they show that if we want to compare a geophysically observed excitation function •a(t) with the excitation function deduced (via deconvolution) from the polar motion observation re(t), we should do so directly (the "direct approach"). To compare re(t) with the polar motion computed (via convolution) from fa(t) (the "integration approach"), as Barnes et al. and Hide did, is misleading.

In this paper, we study the excitation of the Earth's polar motion in connection wit] M; ^Pare associated with the diversity of reference frames involved in observations and theoretical computations. Thus, following the dynamics of the Earth's polar motion, the kinematics that relates observations from different reference frames is developed. The conventional procedures of studying the seismic ...
متن کاملAxial near - Symmetry , Angular Momentum , and Polar Excitation
The mechanism of the excitation of the Earth's polar instability in the absence of external torques is explored. The conventional perturbation scheme used to simplify the Liouville equation has oversimplified the excitation physics. The Earth becomes axially near-symmetrical and slightly triaxial during polar excitation, which induces additional change in the moment of inertia. Polar excitation...
متن کاملOceanic tidal angular momentum and Earth's rotation variations
Luni-solar tides affect Earth's rotation in a variety of ways. We give an overview of the physics and focus on the excitation of Earth rotational variations by ocean tides under the conservation of angular momentum. Various models for diurnal and semidiurnal tidal height and tidal current fields have been derived, following a legacy of a number of theoretical tide models, from the Topex/Poseido...
متن کاملDiurnal/semidiurnal polar motion excited by oceanic tidal angular momentum
The axial component of the oceanic tidal angular momentum (OTAM) has been demonstrated tobe responsible for most of the diurnal and semidiurnal variations in Earth's rotational rate. In this paper we study the equatorial components of OTAM and their corresponding effects on the orientation of Earth's rotational axis, or polar motion. Three ocean tide models derived from TOPEX/Poseidon satellite...
متن کاملVariable Thermal Conductivity and Thermal Radiation Effect on the Motion of a Micro Polar Fluid over an Upper Surface
The intent of this analysis is to explore the influence of thermal radiation paired with variable thermal conductivity on MHD micropolar fluid flow over an upper surface. The novelty of the present model is to consider the fluid flow along an upper horizontal surface of a paraboloid of revolution (uhspr) with the porous medium. This physical phenomenon is described by a set of coupled...
